For the longest time,Grand Theft AutodeveloperRockstar Gameshad managed to carve out a reputation for creating grand open world titles full of exquisite detail with nary a bug in sight. Much like Witcher developer CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077, all that work to build that reputation was flushed down the toilet upon thedisastrous release of the GTA Trilogy, supposed remasters of the GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas that were some of the worst received games of 2021. The Rockstar name no longer guaranteed a minimum level of quality.
With rumors circulating that Rockstar is now planning to release a remaster/remake of the firstRed Dead Redemption, withan updated websiteanda recent Korean ratingadding fuel to the fire, fans can’t help but cast their minds back to the release of the GTA Trilogy remasters and worry about how much effort Rockstar might be putting into giving Red Dead Redemption the updated release that it deserves.

It was u/Plus-Inspection-688 who shared their fears with the Red Dead Redemption subreddit, explaining that the state of the GTA Trilogy makes them anxious for if Rockstar does eventually announce a Red Dead Redemption remake/remaster. Judging by the fact that their post has received 3.5k upvotes and a few hundred comments, it’s safe to assume they’re not the only one.
Diving into the thread itself, you’ll see that the idea of a Red Dead Redemption remaster isn’t something that the majority of fans are looking forward to. The top comment comes from a user called u/Naturally_Fragrant, who says that they’d rather see the game “die with dignity” than see it remastered, though they do stipulate that they’d rather see the game completely remade instead.
Others are a little more hopeful now that the developer behind the GTA Trilogy (Grove Street Games) is no longer working for Rockstar, meaning if a remake/remaster is in development, it’s probably being made in-house. Many are hopeful that Rockstar has “learned its lesson” about outsourcing, while others think the amount of money that the developer made off of the titles despite their quality means it has no incentive to try harder.
Whatever the case, we’ve got to actually wait for Rockstar to confirm the rumors about the Red Dead Redemption remake/remaster before we can start arguing about whether it’s going to do a good job. The rumor is that Rockstar is planning to release the game at some point this year, but it’s best to keep expectations in check just in case all these rumors turn out to be a bunch of baloney. It wouldn’t be the first time.
