The PlayStation Showcase has come and gone, treating us to looks atAssassin’s Creed Mirage,Spider-Man 2, and the upcomingAlan Wake 2. The sequel to a cult classic, viewers got a better look at gameplay with a new trailer, showing off brooding environments and impressive lighting. Its developer meanwhile is bullish about the game and has clarified what we were seeing. Over on Twitter, Remedy’s communications director Thomas Puha clarified that the Alan Wake 2 trailer shown in the PlayStation Showcase was “100 percent running on PlayStation 5”. Puha for some reason really wanted to point it out, perhaps to underline that this is a current-gen game that makes no compromises. “We did say in 2021 that we are gonna push the graphics hard on this one,” he continued.Related:Ghost Of Tsushima 2 Doesn’t Deserve The Huge Pressure It’s UnderRemedyis not being shy about how proud it is about its upcoming game, with Puha saying that the team thinks they’ll have “the best looking game in 2023,” which is not a small boast. To say Alan Wake 2 will be the most visually impressive game of this year means that it will beat off the likes of Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores, Resident Evil 4, Atomic Heart, and upcoming titles like Final Fantasy 16 and Spider-Man 2. It is among good looking company already.

But it seems Alan Wake and Remedy has some big fans, not least Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment, whorepliedto Puha’s tweet with: “Can’t wait to play this one! Congrats!” Previously, we’ve also learned that Remedy is internally quite pleased with the quality of the product it’s made.

In a business document shared last month, Remedy said that “Alan Wake 2 is on its way to becoming a great game and has everyone excited at Remedy”. The document also revealed more details aboutControl 2 and the Max Payne 1+2 remakes.

However, Alan Wake 2’s launch won’t be without a little controversy. Shortly after the PlayStation Showcase, Remedy revealed that Alan Wake 2 will be a digital-only release on both PC and consoles, with the stated reason being to ensure the game is sold at a lower price and because apparently most players don’t buy physical copies anymore. Remedy pointed to the digital-only version of the PS5 and the Xbox Series S.

“It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only,“it said in an FAQ. “Secondly, not releasing a disc helps keep the price of the game at $59.99 / €59.99 and the PC version at $49.99 / €49.99”. Yes, if you hadn’t noticed the console versions of the game will also be $10 more than the PC version. No reason was given for that. So expect digital only for the foreseeable for Alan Wake 2, with the game scheduled for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 17.
