A core part ofDiablo 4’sprogression is advancing your gear. Wearing stronger items will benefit you both offensively and defensively, and you should always be on the lookout for a potential upgrade. Knowing exactly how the Item Rarity system works is essential to forming that perfect gear set, as the available item drops will change depending on your level of progression.

This guide will explain exactly how all Item Rarities work in Diablo 4, including what each color of item means, where to get them from, and which ones you want to equip to maximise your character’s power.
Item Tiers And Rarity Overview
In Diablo 4, there are five tiers of Item Rarity, these being:
They have different drop chances depending on yourlevel,World Tier, and whattype of contentyou are undertaking. Generally speaking, thehigher the Rarity the more powerful the item, as they tend to havemore stats, although this is not always the case, as an item with four useless stats could not be as strong as something with only a couple of your best.
It is the deciding between these items that forms the core of Diablo’s gear progression, and fundamentally you should be working towards having afull set of Legendary and Unique gear. This is because these items have a special stat, called anImprint. These Imprints grant a special bonus, whether it be empowering a skill, or buffing you when under certain effects.
Having as many of these Imprints is core to making a strong build, and while you should not worry too much during the leveling process, once you hitWorld Tier Threeyou should start to upgrade all of your gear above Rare quality, as you hunt for the best Imprints for your class and build.
Uniquesare essentially Legendaries with afixed Imprint and stat variation. Certain ones may be yourbest in slot, depending on your build.

SacredandAncestralitems work slightly differently. They do not add on any additional stats but instead, increase theitem powerandupgrade levels. The item power dictates theminimumandmaximum boundaries each stat can roll, so you always want to search for the highest item power gear you can, to hit higher stat increases.
You cannot begin to loot these additional tiers of loot until you progress intoWorld Tier ThreeandFour, respectively. Another advantage of Sacred and Ancestral gear is the ability toupgrade them an additional time. Upgrading items is very powerful as it provides aflat increase to all stats. This is particularly strong when it comes to upgrading yourWeapons, as theWeapon DPS statforms a core part of your overall damage, so you will be held back by wearing items of lower Rarities.
Your gear can be upgraded at the following NPCs:
Your goal inWorld Tier Threeis to wear afull set of upgraded Sacred Legendary/Unique Itemsbefore you try to advance into World Tier Four.
