How To Start The Price Of Passage
At the start of the game, Oxenfurt is being terrorized by a monster prowling its streets at night. You’ll have to kill it in the side quest,Contract: The Oxenfurt Drunk,to return some normalcy to the city and make this encounter possible.
Once you’ve settled the matter,walk through the archway north of the Oxenfurt Harbor Fast Travel pointto trigger an encounter with two enterprising guards, starting the quest.
Should You Pay The War Tax?
The pair demand payment for a sloppily conceived and likely fictitious war tax from Geralt. While they areonly asking for 50 crowns,it’s almost certain thatthey’re simply looking to extort travelers.While paying them will save you some trouble, it may only embolden the men.
The guards will behappy with the paymentand let Geralt through.
Refuse To Pay
Choosing not to fall for their ploy will have themtry to have Geralt arrested on espionage charges.Their captain punishes them for their stupidity, leading to a subsequent encounter.
If youpaid the guards,you can find themat Novigrad Gateseveral days later, where they willask for 100 crowns.Paying them will end the encounter, while refusing willhave a similar outcome to refusing from the start.
Where To Find The Guards Again
Extorting civilians is almost certainly a chargeable offense, leading tothe guards being punished by their commander.After several days, you can find themeast of Novigrad Gate,where they will try to exact misplaced revenge on Geralt,with three choices.
Bribe Them
The guardsmen willask Geralt for another bribe.Paying them will make the problem go away.
Use Axii
You’ll needDelusion at level onefor the deception to work, though they will leave you in peace if you do.
Take Up The Challenge
The guardsmen willtry to fight Geralt,forcing you into a fistfight.
If youdraw your weapon,they’ll respond in kind. They’ll die in the fight, though you won’t suffer any consequences.
