Skull and Bones has been delayed, delayed, and delayed. What once started as a spin-off to Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, which launched ten years ago in 2013, blossomed into its own game. Kind of like how AC started as a spin-off to Prince of Persia. As the name suggests, it’s all about pirates, but after being announced in 2017, it has earned the reputation of a game that is never coming. Granted, that same title was given to Dead Island 2, and that finally launched this year to fairly decent reviews. Not good by games industry standards, but decent all the same.
Skull and Bones began as an MMO called Black Flag Infinite, not to be confused with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Infinity, and it was set to launch in 2018. However, it was delayed to 2019 as the entire game underwent radical changes, being built again from the ground up as the original assets had become outdated thanks to years of pushback. Eventually, it got a release date in 2022, but this was again delayed to 2023. Here we are, and what we have seen has garnered mixed reactions, mainly drawing complaints about its overly complicated and busy UI.
Regardless, it’s real, and we’ll finally be able to play it later this year. When it will actually come out is still a mystery, as it was delayed again following news that Ubisoft had cancelled three other projects. However, we don’t know what these projects are, as none of them were announced. Good news for Beyond Good and Evil fans, eh?
