Sonic Frontiersmight have made fans happy by adding the blue blur’s iconic spin-dash move in the latest update, but the surprisingly high unlock requirements have really soured the mood.

As part of Sonic’s 32nd birthday celebrations yesterday,Sega released a special episode of Sonic Centralthat showcased various things related to the middle-aged hedgehog that are coming out this year, including Lego skins for Sonic Superstars,a new look at Sonic Prime’s second season, and a deep dive into a previously-announced update for Sonic Frontiers that adds a bunch of new features.

The highlight of that update was undoubtedly the long-awaited addition of the spin-dash, one of Sonic’s most iconic moves that was curiously missing from the base game without any explanation. Fans have been wanting it to make a return in Sonic’s new adventure for quite some time, so they were unsurprisingly very happy to see it as part of the update.

Strangely, though, the video didn’t make mention of a big caveat to the move returning - it has to be unlocked. Sonic fans jumping into Frontiers to play the new update and get the move discovered that it has to be unlocked, and that thegame annoyingly doesn’t even tell you how to do sountil you’ve already completed all of the requirements.Getting some real bad flashbacks to base Sonic Frontiers making you upgrade Sonic’s stats one by one.

After some trial and error, several Sonic fans discovered that, to unlock the spin-dash, you have to S-rank all of the newly-added “Action Chain” challenges that are in the open world. There are around 40 of these challenges and they range from combat trials to having to collect balls of light as fast as possible.

Early impressions of these challenges are that they can be surprisingly difficult, with the S-rank score taking a lot of time to get right for some of them. One early tip is to drop the difficulty down as low as possible and just spam the Cyclone Kick as much as possible, but even if that makes it a little easier, Sonic fans still aren’t happy with the annoyingly high unlock requirements and how they weren’t explained at all during the Sonic Central.

If, like me, you don’t want to spend upwards of an hour completing challenges to unlock a move for a game you’ve already got the platinum trophy for,Twitter user HyperBE32 has already shared a mod on Twitter that instantly unlocks the spin-dash for youand makes sure you don’t have to spend all that time on unlocking the move. Truly embodying Sonic’s “gotta go fast” there.
