The first-ever gameplay demonstration ofSpider-Man 2brought many exciting revelations for fans, however, one lingering question remained unanswered: would players have the freedom to choose which hero to control during gameplay? Today,Insomniac Gameshas finally confirmed that players will indeed have the option to switch between Peter and Miles instantly with a simple button press, but only outside of major story missions.

AfterSpider-Man: Miles Morales' release, it was only natural forMarvelfans to expect both Spider-Men to be playable in the upcoming sequel. Thedevelopers have recently confirmed these expectations, showing how players can seamlessly switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales during the game’s story beats. At that point, it was unclear whether it would be possible to choose which character would be responsible forensuring the safety of the people in Queensthough, and given the considerable amount of timeplayers usually spend exploring the vast New York mapin previous entries, many were eager to find out.

In a recent interview withEurogamer, creative director Bryan Intihar revealed that players will have the ability to “freely switch between them [Peter and Miles] with a simple button press” while exploring the game’s open world, thanks to the power of PlayStation 5. It appears that fans can indeed expect asystem similar to GTA 5’s protagonist swappingin Spider-Man 2, but with added improvements such as seamless transitions without delays or loading screens.

Things are entirely different in the main story though, as Insomniac has already shown to the fans. Instead of allowing random switching between Pete and Miles, disrupting the intended flow, the developers have control over the process, switching roles as necessary to advance the game’s plot. Again, this approach should be familiar to those who have played GTA 5 before, as important story missions like heists were presented by Rockstar in a similar manner. “We are pre-determining those based on what we want to do for how the story plays out,” Intihar said.

Speaking of the game’s open world content, where players can explore at their own pace, the creative director mentioned that there will be missions specifically designed for each of the heroes. “We have content designed around Peter, we have content designed around Miles and we have content where you can play either,” explained Bryan Intihar. The developers are excited to allow players “to pick and choose who [you] want to play as” for various activities, and they believe that this feature is something the team “probably wouldn’t have explored previously.”

We also learned that Spider-Man 2 will have three skill trees: one for each character and one with shared combat abilities. The reason for this, according to the developers, is to provide players with “a sense of familiarity,” so that when you decide to play as the other Spider-Man, you can still pull off some previously learned moves and combos.
