Spider-Manfans are arguing whether it was reallyInsomniac’s Spider-Man who appeared in Across the Spider-Verse, or if it was just a variant of the one we know.

Even before Across the Spider-Verse, Insomniac’s Spider-Man has had a history of appearing in the Spider-Verse movies, first being referenced with the Advanced Suit appearing in the Earth-1610 Spider-Man’s suit collection. That already raises some questions about how Chris Pine’s Spider-Man would have seen the suit, but we’ll dismiss it as a fun little easter egg towards the games.

Things got a lot more complicated in Across the Spider-Verse, however. Not only does Insomniac’s Spider-Man make an in-person appearance during the movie, but he actually shows up multiple times. An animated version of him using the Advanced Suit can be seen in the lobby, while a version of him that’s looks exactly as he does in the games can be seen and referred to as “another video game guy” by Lyla. That’s evenignoring the version of the character we see Ganke playing as in Miles' universe.

Now, a month after the movie’s release, Spider-Man fans are arguing whether that was the actual version of the character that we know from the games, or a variant like all the others we see in the Spider Society. The main post arguing this was started in the Spider-Man PS4 subreddit by Redditor square753wheel, who shared an image of the “another video game guy” Spidey and said, “Uses the model, voiced by Yuri AND LITERALLY SAYS INSOMNIAC SPIDER-MAN. I also really don’t see how it ruins the grounded story insomniac has set up”.

Although a few Spider-Man fans agree with that conclusion, with one of the most upvoted comments being, “Yeah and there was also two other insomniac Spider-men, this seems to be the main one”, there are those who disagree. One Redditor said, “The numbers don’t really prove anything. It’s a version of Insomniac Spider-Man but probably not THE Insomniac Spider-Man”, which seems to be agreed with as the letter after the main number seems to be causing some confusion.

Then there those who think it’s a silly thing to argue about altogether, such as Redditor Hnnnrrrrrggghhhh, who said, “None of these series of media are actually connected very solidly. It’s just references in a movie guys quit whining about it”. My favourite response has to be from Nintenpr0 who, when it was suggested that this could be the “old face PS4 version” of Insomniac Spider-Man, said, “Jesus Christ not this again”. That’s a vibe.

For my money, I think we can easily rule out the animated versions of the character as being variants, or just Spider-people who are wearing the same costume. They’re not referenced as being Insomniac’s Spider-Man like the one voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, so it makes sense that he’s the real deal. What that means for the multiverse in Insomniac’s games is beyond me, but it’s still really just a fun easter egg rather than a promise of that coming to future games.
