Street Fighter 6has broken ground for the series and the fighting genre as a whole in a number of ways. Switching things up significantly since the last game in the series, one of the biggest undertakings for theStreet Fighterteam wasthe inclusion of real-time commentary, a feature the game’s localization director initially thought would be near-impossible to implement.
Andrew Alfonso shares how he was first told about the live commentary feature and the sheer amount of work that needed to go into making it happen duringthe pre-show for this week’s Capcom Showcase. “They asked me to come on early just to get that sorted out so we could have something very natural for the English-speaking audience,” Alfonso explained.

Although the director was handpicked for his expertise in this particular arena, the idea of implementing real-time commentary in a Street Fighter game was daunting. “I was very against the idea to be honest because I thought, ‘No, no we can’t do this’. It’s not because I thought the idea was bad, it’s because I thought about the scope.”
“I play a lot of sports games, so I know how they do the commentary in those games. And they always say, ‘Oh, we recorded like 50,000 lines’. ForMonster Hunter, we only recorded 5,000 lines.” Alfonso admitted working on ten times as many lines as they were used to was a significant mountain to climb, but they eventually settled down after what felt like the impossible had been asked of them and got the job done.
They got the job done well too as the real-time commentary is one of many features added to Street Fighter 6 that has made it one of the best entries in the series to date. Bringing on Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez and TastySteve, Alfonso explained the pair were specifically chosen because they work well together. Thea Trinidad, better known toWWEfans as Zelina Vega,is also one of the real-time commentatorsyou can hear in Street Fighter 6.
