Nintendo’slatest Direct was one of the best in recent memory, as it gave us a look at the titles the company has planned for the rest of the year, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder, another Pikmin 4 trailer, some new Pokemon Scarlet & Violet DLC details, and a lot more. Arguably the biggest reveal at the show was the announcement of a remake of beloved SNES titleSuper Mario RPG, a project that’s been kept so secret for so long that even the original game’s director was surprised when it happened.
First shared byEurogamer, director Chihiro Fujioka responded to a fan on Twitter asking him whether he was involved in the remake. Unfortunately, Fujioka had absolutely no idea that Nintendo was even making a remake in the first place, explaining that he was “very surprised” when he saw the announcement. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like he’s taken too much issue with not being involved, as he also said that he’s “pleased with the news.”

In fact, we still don’t know who’s involved with development at the moment, even though the game is only a little over four months away from release. Those who’ve played the original will know that the title was a joint effort between Nintendo and Square (now Square Enix), though it seems like the latter has had no hand in development whatsoever. All we know right now is that the game’s original composer is returning to create a revamped soundtrack, but everything else appears to be helmed by Nintendo itself.
In other Mario news, those who watched the latest Nintendo Direct will know that a new 2D platformer was annnounced alongside Super Mario RPG Remake, that being Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The 2D games never really attract as much hype as the mainline 3D titles, but there seems to be an increased amount of excitement surrounding Wonder, as it’s the first 2D game to ditch the “New” art style since it was introduced back in 2006.
Given that we haven’t seen a new art style in a 2D Mario game for almost 17 years,fans are pretty thrilled with how Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks. In fact, they’re almost as thrilled as those that are excited overMario’s new elephant form, who managed to whip up saucy fan art in what must have been record time. God help us all if Peach can turn into an elephant too, the Internet just isn’t ready for that.
