Among the most important components in any loadout are Amps, special perks for your character that can come in handy during trials. These can range from reduced movement noise to increased stamina and speed after taking damage, making Amps a must-have for high-score runs. For the most optimal results, equip the best Amps in The Outlast Trials.

How To Unlock Amps In The Outlast Trials

Amps are considered contraband items in The Outlast Trials and can only be obtained by purchasing them from Dorris, a retired test subject that can be found sitting in the Cafeteria located on the top floor of the Murkoff Facility.

However, to get her to do business with you, you’ll first have to reach therapy level 10 in the game by completing trials and earning XP. Afterward, you’ll be given the option to buy Amps from Dorris, with new ones becoming available to purchase every two levels.

How To Use Amps In The Outlast Trials

To use Amps, equip them at the institute’s main central terminal. From here, you may also check your current XP and therapy level by selecting the Records tab. To equip amps, navigate to the Loadout menu, where a list of any currently owned Amps will appear.

You can equip up to three Amps at any time to bring with you during trials, each providing a unique buff to your character. When combined with Rigs and Prescriptions, Amps can go a long way towards maximizing your chances of survival.

9Hide And Breathe: Borderline Useless

Hide And Breathe can be unlocked at therapy level 12 and allows your character to recover stamina faster while inside a hiding spot. Although this sounds useful at first, the benefits of Hide And Breath aren’t that great in practice, as anyone who has time to find a hiding spot generally isn’t hard-pressed for stamina.

With that said, using this Amp is better than not having any at all. Once you have more Amps unlocked, you can safely unequip and forget about Hide And Breathe altogether, as it’s one of the least useful perks in the game.

8Hide And Heal: Medically Mundane

Made available once you reach therapy level 18, Hide And Heal is another relatively ineffective Amp in The Outlast Trials that will let you regenerate health quicker from hiding spots. It functions similarly to Hide And Breathe, meaning it also shares many of the same downsides.

For one, it relies on you taking damage in the first place, which should be actively avoided when aiming for a high score. On top of that, Hide And Heal only recovers a portion of your health bar rather than the full amount.

7Double Doses: Great For Co-op, Terrible For Solo

Unlockable at therapy level 16, Double Doses is a simple and straightforward Amp that will let you get two uses out of Syringes rather than just one. This can be useful when playing with friends, as Syringes allow you to revive dead teammates.

Naturally, the opposite applies while playing alone, as you’re unable to use a Syringe on yourself. Like Hide And Heal, this Amp also relies on you or your allies taking damage in the first place, which should be avoided as much as possible.

6Quick Escape: Speed Boost Engaged

Next up is Quick Escape, one of the best Amps in The Outlast Trials that becomes available at therapy level 24. The benefits of this Amp are quite potent, temporarily increasing your character’s stamina and speed immediately after taking damage.

Aside from having the obvious advantages for solo players, this Amp can be leveraged to prevent your entire team from dying from the same enemy while grouped up. Unfortunately, like many of the previous entries, Quick Escape assumes you’ll take damage in the first place.

5Antitoxin: Sanity Security Blanket

To unlock the Antitoxin Amp, you’ll first have to reach therapy level 26 before purchasing it from Dorris. While equipped, it will reduce the duration of Psychosis’s effects by half and let your character regain their sanity after some time has passed.

This can be very useful in a game like The Outlast Trials, where being driven mad by enemy encounters and traps can lead to your untimely demise. Having said that, more experienced players will likely know how to best avoid such obstacles, making Antitoxin less impactful as you progress.

4Cacophony: Turn Up The Volume

Moving along, Cacophony is another excellent Amp to have in your arsenal that becomes obtainable starting at therapy level 14. The effects of this Amp are quite simple: bricks and bottles now make more noise than before.

As such, you’ll be able to distract enemies more easily and give yourself a chance to run away before they can catch you. This is extremely useful for both solo and co-op play as it allows you to lure enemies away from a specific area, distract them from attacking nearby allies, and create opportunities to escape.

3Strong Arm: Throw Caution To The Wind

Rather than make bricks and bottles noisier, why not turn them into deadly weapons? With the Strong Arm Amp unlocked at therapy level 20, you can momentarily knock out enemies just by hitting them with either of the two objects.

What makes this Amp so great is that its applications are fairly open-ended; whether you need to bypass an enemy blocking a doorway, prevent them from capturing a teammate, or simply put them out of commission, Strong Arm can help get the job done.

2Noise Reduction: Running Rampant

You can unlock the Noise Reduction Amp by reaching therapy level 22, at which point you’ll have sunk plenty of hours into the game. This is definitely worth the effort to have one of the best Amps in The Outlast Trials, especially if you’re the kind of player who likes to run around.

Once equipped, this Amp will reduce the amount of noise your character generates from running and opening doors. As such, you’ll find you may speed through trials more quickly while maintaining some degree of stealth.

1Slippers: Broken Glass Immunity

As if maneuvering your way through a spooky mental facility patrolled by monstrous enemies wasn’t enough, The Outlast Trials also scatter broken glass throughout the environment. Not only is this painful, but it can get you caught as your character makes noise anytime they step on these sadistic shards.

To counter this, you should unlock the Slippers Amp as soon it becomes available at therapy level 10. While equipped, it makes it so your character no longer generates noise when stepping on broken glass. To top it off, the slippers themselves look quite cozy and fashionable.
