After you’ve been in your Minecraft world for a decent amount of time, you will probably have every crop type growing nearby. This list will include crops that you should prioritize early in the game when you don’t have as much space or resources available to you.
7Wheat
First and foremost, wheat should be the crop that you prioritize and plant as close as possible to your base. Wheat seeds can be obtained by simply cutting grass on top of dirt blocks. This doesn’t require any tools and is simple to do. Overall, wheat seeds are the easiest to gather out of all crops in the game.
Many crops, including wheat, will yield seeds upon harvest. This will essentially give you infinite wheat seeds.
With wheat seeds in hand, you can plant them on tilled land near your base. The crop will grow pretty fast, yielding one piece of fully-grown wheat. Combining three pieces of wheat together will create bread, which is a great food to have on hand. Although bread might seem simple, it’s a must-have food for new players and veterans alike.
6Sugarcane
Sugarcane can be used directly, as well as converted into sugar. While sugar can then be used in cakes, you will want to grow sugarcane for the raw resource. This can be turned into paper, which comes in handy in many different situations.

As expected, paper is used to make books. With books, you can then make bookshelves, which are needed to power up your Enchanting Table. If you have anElytra, paper can also be used to make rockets (when combined withgunpowder). Rockets are essential to Elytra-flying, so we recommend setting up asugarcane farm.
5Carrots
After you’ve built up your home base sufficiently, you may want to upgrade your food source. If this is your plan, we recommend planting some carrots. Carrots can be eaten, but they truly shine when combined with gold. Golden Carrots are one of the best food sources in the game, and can even be used to breed horses.
Golden Carrots restore six hunger points, which makes them perfect for tough situations where you are surrounded by hostile mobs. Additionally, Golden Carrots can be used to make Potions of Night Vision, which is essential if you areexploring the Deep Dark. We suggest doing your exploration with a few Golden Carrots tucked away in your inventory at all times.
4Nether Wart
Nether Wart is a non-edible crop that needs to be first harvested from the Nether before you plant it. This little red crop grows directly on soul sand; it cannot be grown on any other block.
Instead of eating Nether Wart, you will use it to make potions. With a soul soil Nether Wart patch nearby, you will be able to begin the brewing process without straying too far from home.
3Sweet Berries
Okay, we know that sweet berries aren’t the best food to consume. They don’t restore nearly enough hunger, and there are better food options out there. Sweet berries come with their own defense though, which is why you should consider growing a few of these bushes around your base.

Have you ever accidentally wandered into a sweet berry bush? It will damage you, but not enough to quickly kill you. Instead, you are left moving awkwardly slow while your armor takes some damage. With several of these bushes set up around your base’s perimeter, you may keep out mobs and players alike.
2Pumpkin
Next, we have the humble pumpkin. When you use sheers on this gourd, you will create a carved version, that can then be worn on your head. While this may feel silly, it’s actually a great defense against Endermen, who attack when looked at. If a carved pumpkin is on your head, you can stare at them all you want.
Pumpkins are also used in the creation of Iron Golems and Snowmen.
In addition to wearing this crop, they are great for villager trading. With anautomated pumpkin farm, you’re able to sell tons of this crop to the farmer villager for emeralds.
1Cactus
Lastly, we have the cactus. This prickly crop can only be found in the desert. Deserts aren’t too common, and you may end up searching for a while to find this sandy biome. As such, it’s important to have cactus growing near your base.
Like sweet berry bushes, cactuses can cause damage, making them a great defense. Additionally, green dye can only be made with a cactus. If you need to make this dye, it’s best to have cactus on hand, instead of setting out to find a desert.
