7Xenoblade Chronicles (Series)

Non-Binary And Polyamorous Characters

One of the most exciting inclusions in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is Juniper - an androgynous,non-binary character. They join the party after a misguided attempt to attack the heroes to appease a powerful entity. Everyone’s shared hatred of this dictating figure forms a bond to rise against conforming to unfair standards.

Roc from Xenoblade 2 also identifies as non-binary in the character status screen, using he/him pronouns, which is common for masc-leaning enby folks. The other big inclusion is Sheba, who is confirmed to be a lesbian in an optional side quest.

In a conversation with Mythra, they discuss the types of guys they’d date if they were straight, which also implies there are more queer characters. In the epilogue for Xenoblade 3, Rex ends up marrying Pyra, Mythra, and Nia in what could be considered a bisexual polyamorous relationship.

The Fire Emblem series has a varied history with the LGBTQ+ community. Luckily, Three Houses does a great job with its representation, featuring many dating options within a class of diverse students. Dating is a core part of the game that shows how relationships can flourish and struggle during a time of war, and it affects multiple characters' storylines beyond the plot’s final moments.

Relationships include a loving amount of detail specific to each character’s personality, and interactions often feel natural and fleshed out. You play as the teacher who organizes seating positions in the cafeteria, provides words of wisdom to specific characters, and lays out group activities to adhere to the needs of each student. This implementation strays away from manipulative elements, since each character has autonomy over their actions with defined sexual preferences and traits.

Story spoilers below13 Sentinels is a unique strategy game that dissects the lives of multiple characters in a time-bending story. Thanks to a rewrite of the script for Western audiences, the second of the 13 stories between soldier Takatoshi and science-loving student Tsukasa is a sweet example of gender and sexual exploration.

After accidentally putting an infection into the world, Tsukasa disguises themselves as a woman named Kikiro while traveling to the 1940s. You take control of Takatoshi, who discovers this after developing feelings for the nerdy prodigy. It’s later revealed that Tsukasa enjoys exploring both parts of their personality and encloses their non-binary identity. On the flip side, Takatoshi, upon realizing that Tsukasa and Kikiro are the same person, realizes that he is pansexual.

Relationships are a big part of Stardew Valley’s core gameplay loop. When you aren’t farming or exploring, you’ll be chatting with an array of potential bachelors and bachelorettes for the upcoming flower dance. This is just one of the many events that are enhanced by the company of a loved one.

The decision to pursue a relationship can feel like a big commitment, so it’s essential that everyone feels comfortable with their choices. Luckily, every romanceable character is bisexual, which allows everyone to experience the joys of a relationship on a cozy, charming farm.

3Unpacking

A Cozy Game About Queer Exploration

Unpacking has a double meaning in its title. After a house move, you’re tasked with the simple, zen-like job of moving objects from storage boxes to different living spaces. The interesting thing is that each of the items comes together to form personal stories about the new residents. As the game progresses, it’s revealed that the same person houses these living quarters at different stages of life.

Certain items hint at a story about queer exploration and being trapped in a loveless relationship. Simple things, from how certain items change from each location to the updated descriptions, show a clear storyline of this character’s struggles and the distinct way they overcome such adversity.

The subtle details and interpretive elements add a lot of emotional weight to the experience, and it’s great to see video games being used to tell such a story in a way that passive media can’t replicate.

2Ikenfell

A Turn-Based RPG About A Magical School

Ikenfell’s huge cast of playable characters almost entirely consists of people from the LGBTQ+ community, including a trio of non-binary characters who all use different pronouns. The group dynamic feels natural and grounded because these adolescent friends are shown helping out with each other’s personal problems, forming a tight-knit bond that lasts throughout the tactical adventure.

The cast itself consists of a bisexual protagonist who is granted powers upon entering the magical realm that her sister is trapped in, a lesbian who can use lightning magic and has a cute crush on the protagonist, a non-binary alchemy student who suffers from low self-esteem, a masc-leaning black non-binary bookworm who uses runes to attack, and a black non-binary junior professor who uses Ze/Zir neo-pronouns.

One of Undertale’s most impactful elements is the quirky dialogue and memorable interactions with underworld creatures. Thanks to the conversational combat, people who often felt overlooked by the RPG genre can connect to the personalities of these shunned beings.

There are a lot of gender and sexually diverse characters, each with unique backstories. A key example isthe cute lesbian relationshipbetween introverted scientist Alphys and strong-willed amphibian guard Undyne. There’s also a surprisingly large cast of non-binary characters, including protagonist Frisk and chilled-out ghost Napstablook. The Switch version also has an exclusive trans character named Mad Mew Mew.
