The writing style in the game is not complex where you might scratch your head while trying to decipher its meaning. It’s simple and approachable while maintaining its regal and medieval flare. The world of Valisthea is filled to the brim with anthems and legends that carry powerful language that further colors the characters’ incredible line delivery.Spoilers for Final Fantasy 16’s story below.

10"I Doubt That Lot Could Stay A Moogle’s Fart."

Although the lonely blacksmith can be rude and unapproachable, Blackthorn has some hilarious lines throughout the story. Upon meeting the Hideaway’s blacksmith, he makes fun of your poorly constructed armor by making a clever, yet childish joke about and their alleged soft and weak flatulence.

As soon as you meet Blackthorn, you can tell he is a man of his craft, and he rather not talk to the populace of the Hideaway, but he can still make light of the situation with a fun joke here and there.

9"Benedikta’s Rage Knows No Bounds And That’s On A Good Day."

After defeating Benedikta for the first time, and Clive finding out that he has the power to absorb Eikonic powers from Dominants, Benedikta Harman, one of the greatest minds in the Kingdom of Waloed, is overcome with rage, and she summons a massive tornado in the midst of the forest.

Known as a cold and ruthless leader, people adjacent to her know not to mess with her or the situation could end up in a bloodbath led by the Garuda Dominant herself.

8"The Ghost You’ve Chasing… It Was Inside You All Along. Though I’ll Be Damned If I Know What That Means."

Final Fantasy 16’s protagonist Clive Rosfield’s inner conflict revolves around his rage toward the second Dominant of Fire for killing his younger brother Joshua. He has spent 13 years of his life chasing his brother’s murderer, but once he defeats Benedikta and fully transforms into the Eikon Ifrit, his companion, Cidolfus Telamon, realizes that Clive is the one who murdered Joshua on that night at Phoenix Gate.

Cid is known for his clever dialog with a hint of old man wisdom and this quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of this game’s version of Cid.

7"Fool Is The Shepherd Who Heeds Every Bleat Of The Flock, And I Will Suffer Yours No Longer."

Benedikta Harman is one of the best female characters in the game. She holds much influence in the Kingdom of Waloed and her cold demeanor makes her equally respected and feared by her underlings. Although Benedikta serves Waloed, her allegiance lies with her lover and Permanent Financial Advisor of the Dhalmekian Republic, Hugo Kupka

While gracing us with one of the best lines in the game, showing her lack of patience for Clive’s antics, it feels like the gamecould’ve done much more with this shortly-lived character.

6"…But Our World Isn’t Ready For A Place Like That."

The Outlaw Cid is on a mission to save the world. The world sees Bearers, humans who are born with the ability to use magic without the need for a Crystal, as free labor. As Bearers use their magic in intensive manual labor, such as mining Crystals for the populace, their life force diminishes and can turn into stone, cutting their lives short.

Cid explains to Clive that he wishes to see the Mothercrystals, the source of all Magic, destroyed so that people and bearers alike can coexist as equalsrather than master and slave. He knows his plan is a radical one, but shows Clive his conviction in his plan to make the world a better place.

5"He’ll Make A Fine Hound One Day."

Even when he was a young pup, the Archduke of the Grand Duchy of Rosaria knew that Torgal was meant for greatness. During the early sections of the game, you are greeted by a small Torgal who loves to chase butterflies. Elwin Rosfield rescued the puppy from one of his expeditions to the north of Rosaria and gifted it to his son Clive.

Throughout the story, Torgal stays loyal to you and your partner, Jill Warrick, and eventually see him unleash his true power as Fenrir. A fine hound, indeed.

4"May The Blessing Of The Crystal Go With You."

Similar to “May the force be with you,” from Star Wars, this farewell is commonly said in the world of Valisthea, and although there are many instances that the saying can be pointed out in pivotal moments of the story, the best one is delivered by Jill Warrick after enacting her revenge.

After the tragic events of Phoenix Gate, the Iron Kingdom invaded Rosalith and kidnapped women and children to do their bidding. Young Jill was one of them. While serving the Ironbloods, Jill’s Eikon power awoke, turning her into a war weapon for the Iron Kingdom. She eventually deals a killing blow on one of the Crystalline Orthodox’s leaders while delivering this amazing line.

3"…And Shield The Firebird’s Flare Forevermore."

Just like the Crystal Blessing farewell, this line is often heard throughout the game, but it carries such a powerful meaning. As Clive is sworn to the First Shield, a protector of the Dominant of Phoenix, this line shows his resolve to not only his duty to the Shields but his love for his brother.

Throughout the story, you see Clive’s motives change from vengeance to repentance, but in the end, it is all for his younger brother, whom he feels he has failed.

2"Come To Me, Ifrit!"

Throughout the length of the first few acts of Final Fantasy 16, you find yourself as Clive coming to terms with the realization that he is, in fact, the person who murdered his younger brother Joshua. Because of this guilt, Clive is unable to summon his Eikon Ifrit willingly.

This line is uttered by Clive a couple of times, but the first time is the most impactful. He realizes that the power that he carries should not be seen as a burden, but rather a gift that he can use to change the world for his friends and loved ones.

1"The Only Fantasy Here Is Yours. And We Shall Be Its Final Witness."

Although it may seem extremely cheesy, but this clever way of weaving the title of the game in a line during the climax of the final battle against Ultima is one of the most memorable moments in the entire game.

Clive doesn’t blatantly exclaim “Final Fantasy 16!” to Ultima, but he does so in a way that feels natural to the exchange of words and blows in that heated final moment. Cue the Leonardo DiCaprio GIF.
