Besides accusations of racism imagery for having a white American arrive in a fictional African country to start blasting waves of Black people (never mind the fact they were zombies), the second-worst criticism players had forResident Evil 5was the fact everything looked kinda weird. That was largely due to the green filter that certainly gave Kijuju an ominous otherworldly atmosphere but seemed mostly inappropriate for the African savannah.But thanks to modern technology, modders have been able to take Resident Evil 5’s HD remaster and give it a makeover. Without the green filter and with a little bit of ray tracing added, Resident Evil 5 can look almost as good as even modern titles.Related:Resident Evil Should Make Umbrella’s End Into Its Own GameFor example, check out JJ’s latestResidence of Evil streamwhere he played RE5 co-op using ReShade, a piece of software that lets you apply post-processing to live gameplay. ReShade allows you to adjust color, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, depth of field, saturation, blurry, and even lighting to almost any old game out there.
It takes a bit of work, which is why JJ made things easier on himself using a ReShade preset from mod creator AsD-_17. This mod basically does all the complicated ReShade adjustments for you, applying all those improvements in a way that hopefully doesn’t break anything and provides maximum visual fidelity.
The mod comes with four different presets: Colorful, Gray Color, “Slight Improvements”, and ReSahde Green Filter. That last one retains the green filter from the base game, but the first one gets rid of it to show how the game would look like without it. It also provides adjustments to lighting and shadows to appear sharper and more realistic. The net effect is a total visual overhaul for Resident Evil 5, and the results are stunning.
Check out Residence of Evil’s stream and you’ll see colors and shadows that you would never have seen in the original RE5. Everything is brighter, more vibrant, and clearer. It honestly looks almost as good as the Resident Evil 4 remake.
