Learning the mechanics that influence these dice rolls is crucial to mastering the game. Among theseare ability modifiers, advantages and disadvantages, and inspiration. Learning how to use inspiration can arm you with a powerful tool to weave even the worst luck into a heroic tale—so let’s get into it.
What Is Inspiration?
Similarly to its namesake fromDungeons & Dragons,Inspirationis a resourcethat lets youreroll one single dice roll.
Unlike its namesake, however,Inspirationin Baldur’s Gate 3 canonly be used on Ability Checks. Essentially, it gives you the equivalent ofadvantageon oneAbility Check, which you canchoose to useat any time.
Inspirationshould not be confused with theBard class features,Bardic InspirationorCombat Inspiration.
You can have up tofour chargesof inspiration at once, after which youdo not receiveany more—so ensure not to hoard them, and remember to use them at the right moments.
Lastly, remember thatInspirationgives youanother chance, not a guaranteed success. You’ll be able toroll as many times as you have Inspiration charges, but if you fail all four rerolls, then it might be time to accept your fate and start rolling with the punches.
How Do You Use Inspiration?
Every so often, despite our best efforts at remembering information, lying to goblins, or petting that perfectly non-suspicious sheep in a swamp, we fail. That’s just the nature of the dice. Still, sometimes a roll comes around that we don’t want to fail. That’s where Inspiration comes in.
As long as you haveat least one charge of inspiration, the game will prompt you toreroll failed rollsat the Failure screen.
All you have to do is click that “Roll Again” button, and you’ll get another shot at changing fate.
That said, remember that Inspiration is generallynot too easy to come by, so make sure not to squander it all on something silly.
Unfortunately, Inspiration canonly be used duringAbility Checksthat bring up thedice-rolling UI. This means it cannot be used for passive checks such as Perception, Arcana, or Religion checks when your character is walking around.
How Do You Get Inspiration?
Inspiration is gainedwhen an event occurs during your travels thatalign with a party character’s background. Think of them aspersonal achievementsfor each character, depending on theirpersonality traits, bonds, andideals.
